Sleep With The Right People represents an alliance between two powerful groups: the LGBT community and UNITE HERE (the union representing more than 400,000 hotel and restaurant workers). Both face similar struggles in their quest for fair and equal treatment of all individuals.
How UNITE HERE Promotes LGBT Causes:
- The union actively protects the rights of LGBT workers, even where legal protections aren’t yet in place. How? Every union contract includes workplace non-discrimination clauses protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. These clauses prevent employers from discriminating against our members regardless of existing municipal, state, or federal laws.
- UNITE HERE General President Bruce Raynor was recently listed as one of the nation’s top labor leaders to publicly support marriage equality for same-sex couples.
- In 1989 San Francisco’s UNITE HERE Local 2 started a Health and Welfare fund for member hotel workers suffering from HIV and AIDS. The fund, supported by employer contributions, is used to cover alternative treatments and other medications not normally covered by general healthcare policies. The fund has benefited hundreds of hotel workers.
- An inspiring letter written by UNITE HERE’s Hospitality Industry President John Wilhelm shows the union’s continued respect for and support of the LGBT community.
- UNITE HERE’s GESO (Graduate Employees and Students Organization) has supported efforts to increase worldwide availability of HIV medications.
Justice for Hotel Workers: How the LGBT Community Can Help
-
According to recent statistics, the American gay and lesbian population represents close to a $60 billion travel market. But a staggering number of the hotel workers who serve us are struggling to make ends meet. For all of their hard work, they're living at or below the poverty line.
-
Keeping abreast of and honoring current hotel worker strikes, work stoppages, and boycotts will go a long way in restoring dignity and respect to our brothers and sisters who deserve a shot at the American Dream. We can all spread the word by speaking out about the Hotel Workers Rising campaign and its efforts to lift one another above the poverty line.
